UX WRITING CHALLENGE DAY 10

Proactivity
UX Writing Challenge

THE SCENARIO

The user is trying to view a website to help them buy a car. But, the content can’t load without the user’s location. They need to enter their ZIP code and first name.

THE CHALLENGE

Ask them where they live and who they are without sounding like you're unnecessarily mining their data.

THE RESEARCH

Once more, I used Jane Ruffino’s Microcopy Canvas in order to design such an specific message. The main pain point was clear: asking the user’s data usually brings discomfort, even if it’s a necessary step as in this particular case (the user needs to share location before browsing cars near his area).

THE SOLUTION

After some writing, I realized I needed to make the goal of asking such data very clear: what was the benefit of sharing the location for the user?

The characters’ limit of the challenge forced me to be very direct and concise, that’s why the button played an important role in expressing why sharing data was necessary. I wanted the screen to become more than a simple formulary; a setting page for the website to make a more specific car search. Or at least, I wanted the user to feel it that way.
